Kim Dooley & Country Custom Win NRHA Non Pro Derby

Oklahoma City, OK – June 25, 2010 – The 2010 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby featured the $40,000 added Level 4 Non Pro; $22,500 added Level 3 Non Pro; $12,500 added Level 2 Non Pro; $7,500 added Level 1 Non Pro; and $5,000 added Prime Time Non Pro division finals on Friday, June 25 at Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, Okla. This year’s Non Pro entries increased more than 40% over 2009 and paid out more than $165,000.

As last to go in the Non Pro finals, Kim Dooley of Scottsdale, Arizona and Country Custom brought the evening to a thrilling end. The duo topped all 50 finalists with a score of 225 to win the 2010 NRHA Derby Level 4 Non Pro division championship and $10,451.  Country Custom (Custom Crome x Calatrava) is a four-year-old gelding owned by Tom E. Dooley and bred by Gail H. Klapper. Prior to the Derby, Country Custom had over $48,000 in NRHA earnings and recently won the NRBC non pro championship with Dooley aboard.

For her championship run, Dooley earned the use of a four-horse Cimarron Trailer, NRHA Lawson trophy, Bob’s Custom Saddles trophy saddle, Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates from Rios of Mercedes, Pard’s Western Shop, Platinum Performance, SmartPak and Shorty’s Caboy Hattery, a pair of Classic Equine ProTech boots, and Flair Equine Nasal Strips.

As the sire of the NRHA Level 4 Non Pro Derby Champion, Custom Crome won the NRHA Sire & Dam Program sire award, including $1,500 and an NRHA Bronze trophy.

Reserve Champion Mandy McCutcheon rode Starstruck Girl, a 2006 mare by Million Dollar Sire Smart Starbuck and out of Good Time Show Girl owned by McQuay Stables, Inc., earning $8,680.

Michael A. Garnett, Lincoln, Nebraska, and his gelding Arc Smokin Gun (Gunner x Custom Mahogany) earned the Level 3 division Non Pro and the Prime Time Non Pro championships with a 220.5. The four-year-old, with previous NRHA earnings of over $18,000, was bred by Arcese Quarter Horses USA. Garnett and Arc Smokin Gun will add $6,860 and $2,695 to their earnings for the wins. Garnett will also take home NRHA Lawson trophies, Bob’s Custom Saddles trophy saddle, two Montana Silversmiths trophy buckles, and gift certificates from Rios of Mercedes, Pard’s Western Shop, Platinum Performance, SmartPak and Shorty’s Caboy Hattery, a pair of Classic Equine ProTech boots, and Flair Equine Nasal Strips.

Robin Murphy, San Antonio, Texas, won the Level 2 Non Pro division championship aboard her gelding Instantee (Tejons Peppy Doc x Suddenly Shiney). The five-year-old gelding was bred by Carolyn Edson. The duo earned a score of 218.5 for $5,123 and the win. Murphy also won an NRHA Lawson trophy, Bob’s Custom Saddles trophy saddle, Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates from Rios of Mercedes, Pard’s Western Shop, Platinum Performance and SmartPak, a pair of Classic Equine ProTech boots, and Flair Equine Nasal Strips. 

Eighteen-year-old Lauren Hall of Katy, Texas, and her mare Reminic So Tari earned the Level 1 Non Pro division championship with a 220 score. The five-year-old mare (Reminic N Dunit x Lena So Tari) was bred by Judy Anderson and had over $8,500 in NRHA earnings. For the win, the pair added another $2,773 to their earnings, an NRHA Lawson trophy, Bob’s Custom Saddles trophy saddle, Montana Silversmiths trophy buckle, gift certificates from Rios of Mercedes, Pard’s Western Shop, Platinum Performance and SmartPak, a pair of Classic Equine ProTech boots, and Flair Equine Nasal Strips. 

The Youth Non Pro Derby Champion was determined by the go-round score earlier this week. Winning the championship with a 215.5 was Jordan Donnelly, Aubrey, Texas and Smokems Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Peppys Smokem), a four-year-old mare owned by Kimberly Ferguson and bred by Ruth Anderson. Fourteen-year-old Donnelly is a past NRHA Youth Non Pro Futurity champion and has over $83,000 in NRHA earnings. For her efforts, Donnelly won $740, an NRHA Lawson trophy, Bob’s Custom Saddles trophy saddle, gift certificates from Rios of Mercedes, Pard’s Western Shop and SmartPak, a pair Classic Equine ProTech boots, and Flair Equine Nasal Strips.
